Baby Finger Food Review: Happy Baby™ Organic Baby Foods

Our 2 and 3 year old food critics put Happy Baby™ Organic Foods to the test this past weekend.  These toddlers are picky eaters (as most toddlers are) and of course they love to snack on cookies and sweets, which doesn't make the parents happy. So, we went looking for a healthy and nutritious snack that would appeal to these toddlers' capricious palates. On the weekend we had them try the different Happy Baby™ organic food products and the Whole Grain Organic Puffs were the immediate favorites. The kiddies enjoyed holding the eco-friendly containers with their own hands and picking puffs with their little fingers. As parents we had peace of mind knowing that our kids were eating a naturally healthy organic snack that's been fortified with vitamins and minerals. These Happy Baby Organic Puffs are a keeper!

Eating Disorders, Fertility and Pregnancy

Women nowadays suffer from constant  exposure to "super thin beauty" and feel a lot of pressure to keep their bodies thin and toned. I mean...just open any magazine and what do you see?
ultra thin models, who are supposedly the ultimate standard of glamour and beauty - the ideal body type!
It's no wonder so many millions of people don't feel comfortable in their own skin and women specially may succumb to the pressure and develop eating disorders, like bulimia and anorexia.

So what happens when women with an eating disorder try to conceive a baby or are actually expecting a child?
"It is a growing and disturbing fact that more and more pregnant women are suffering eating disorders for fear of gaining too much of weight during pregnancy. By restricting calories and over exercising during pregnancy, you are consequently putting your own health and your baby’s health at risk."

If you are trying to conceive and have an eating disorder, your chances to conceive can be greatly reduced. If you are already pregnant and suffer from bulimia or anorexia, you should think of your baby first and recognize that you have a problem that can be fatal for your little one.

"Do not silently struggle with your eating disorder alone. Seeking professional help or confiding in family and friends, by no means will make you a bad mother in their eyes. The earlier you have the help of your support group and medical treatment, the better are your chances of successfully dealing with it. "

Hooked on Piggy Paint

I used to love painting my nails when I was a little. Just didn't know how toxic nail polish could be! And now that I have my own little girl, I was thrilled to discover that Piggy Paint was a safer alternative to the common nail polish. Piggy Paint is a non-toxic water based nail polish made with natural ingredients and specially formulated for kids.

The polish is free of formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, biphenyl A, ethyl acetate and acetone; has no offensive smells and comes in 14 colorful shades. There is also a Piggy Paint Nail Polish remover that's safe, odorless, and  hypoallergenic.

I got a little sample in the mail and as soon as I had it in my hands had to do my nails...ahhh....it's been months since I painted my nails. I loved the piggy paint on myself (yes I'm not a little girl anymore but I loved it!). There were no stinky fumes, it was a breeze to apply, and it dried in record time.
Then it was Pietje's turn. She found it very funny to have her little toenails painted to match mommy's fingernails. She was feeling very girly and I truly enjoyed that special bonding moment with my daughter. We are now hooked on Piggy Paint!

What I also like about Piggy Paint is that it's made in the USA and that the company was started by a mompreneur who wanted to make safer products for children.

New Concerns Raised About Chemical in Leading Baby Shampoo

If you've been following our posts about the toxic substances contained in many popular skin and hair care products, then you also know about the efforts made by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics to create public awareness and to push for stricter laws and regulations in the cosmetics industry. Their latest update is on a peer-reviewed article in the Journal of the Dermatology Nurses’ Association. The article raised concerns that a chemical preservative used in America’s leading baby shampoo may be causing increased rates of allergic contact dermatitis and mild to open sore skin irritations.

Here's more from the CFSC latest update:

"The paper states that quaternium 15, a chemical preservative that kills bacteria by releasing formaldehyde, “is the most sensitizing formaldehyde-releasing preservative and has been repeatedly shown to be a strong allergen that can cause contact dermatitis.” Quaternium 15 -- found in many baby products including Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, Mr. Bubble Bath and Huggies Baby Wash -- is considered by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group to be among the most clinically significant contact allergens in children.

“Quaternium 15 is present in an alarmingly high number of baby products, making exposure and sensitization at an early age increasingly common,” said Sharon Jacob, M.D., co-author of the paper and physician at the Department of Medicine and Pediatrics at Rady Children’s Hospital. “This is a concern because repeated exposures to sensitizing chemicals, especially in early life, can cause a person to develop allergic reactions over time. Therefore, we advise parents to choose products without quaternium 15 and other formaldehyde-releasing preservatives whenever possible.”

According to Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database of cosmetic safety (www.cosmeticsdatabase.com), more than 600 products contain quaternium 15, many of them baby products labeled “extra gentle” and “for extra sensitive skin.” Johnson & Johnson and Cover Girl make the highest number of products in the database containing the chemical.

An estimated 72.9 million adults in the United States suffer from allergic contact dermatitis, and most are never properly diagnosed, according to the cover article in the July 2009 Skin & Aging magazine, co-authored by Dr. Jacob. The authors conclude that proper diagnosis and avoidance of sensitizing chemicals could help patients avoid a lifetime of contact dermatitis.

The papers come on the heels of a March 2009 report by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, No More Toxic Tub: Getting Contaminants Out of Children's Bath & Personal Care Products, which revealed that dozens of top-selling children’s bath products, including Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, were contaminated with the carcinogens formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane.

In the wake of the March report, thousands of stores in China pulled Johnson’s baby products off shelves and several class-action lawsuits were filed against the company. New York Senator Kristen Gillibrand introduced a bill in Congress that would require FDA to limit contaminants in baby bath products.

In August, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and the American Nurses Association met with top executives from Johnson & Johnson (JNJ: NYSE) to ask the company to remove hazardous chemicals from its popular children’s products.

“The meeting was a positive step, and we’re optimistic that a productive dialogue will continue,” said Lisa Archer, national coordinator of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics from the Breast Cancer Fund. “We urge Johnson & Johnson to show its leadership by reformulating its baby products to remove quaternium 15 and other chemicals of concern. Many companies are already making products without these hazardous ingredients.”

Review and Celebrity Fans of the Belly Bandit

We found this Belly Bandit review on The Insider website. The review was posted by "Babyscoop" from celebritybabyscoop.com

"The Belly Bandit is designed to help women’s mid-sections bounce back quicker after giving birth. Essentially, the Belly Bandit is an abdominal compression wrap designed to help reduce the swelling of the uterus, decrease bloating caused by water retention, support the legs and back and provide additional support for breast feeding moms. The Belly Bandit can be worn snuggly around the waist as soon as the day after delivery. Wearing it after a c-section may actually decrease the post-op recovery time by minimizing associated incision pain, which allows greater mobility post-surgery. To reach maximum benefits, it should be worn for 6-8 weeks post delivery. I can’t wait to try out my very own Belly Bandit when my second baby arrives this October. I really could have used this after my first baby was born via c-section. It seems like it took forever to lose my SWUB (Saggy White Under Belly) - the Belly Bandit would have been the perfect ‘accessory’ post baby.
Celebrity fans of the Belly Bandit include Diane Farr, Tori Spelling, Halle Berry, Jessica Alba & Gwen Stefani."
