Infantino recalls 1 Million Baby Slings

Infantino's recalled SlingRider and Wendy Bellissimo baby slingsInfantino is recalling approximately 1 million "Sling Rider" and "Wendy Bellissimo" infant slings sold in the U.S. and Canada due to a suffocation risk.

The recall follows three reports of deaths that occurred in 2009: according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission a 7-week-old infant in Philadelphia; a 6-day-old infant in Salem, Ore.; and a 3-month-old infant in Cincinnati died while in the slings

The Infantino SlingRider is a soft fabric sling with  padded shoulder strap designed for infants up to 20 lbs. “Infantino” is printed on the plastic slider located on the strap. “Infantino,” “SlingRider” and the item number are printed on the instruction/warning label inside the baby sling carrier. "Wendy Bellissimo" slings were sold only at Babies “R” Us and have a sewn-in label on the inside of the strap that says "Wendy Bellissimo Media, Inc." and lists Item numbers 3937500H7 & 3937501H7.

Infantino sold the slings in the US and Canada from January 2003 through March 2010 at Walmart, Burlington Coat Factory, Target, Babies R Us, BJ’s Wholesale, various baby and children’s stores and other retailers nationwide, and on the Web at Amazon.com, for between $25 and $30. Of the total amount of slings recalled, only 15,000 were sold in Canada.

The recall says that consumers should stop using the recalled slings immediately and contact Infantino to receive a free replacement product: choice of a Wrap & Tie infant carrier, or a 2 in 1 Shopping Cart Cover, or a 3 in 1 Grow & Play Activity Gym. A Jittery Pals Rattle will also be provided.

For more information, contact Infantino at (866) 860-1361 or visit the firm’s website at www.infantino.com.

Agoo's Leg Huggers are designed for babies on the move. Be it crawling, climbing, running or dancing, Leg Huggers offer protection with fabulous function and flare. Designed perfectly to fit over baby's legs, they provide warmth from the elements and an added layer under dresses or over short pants.

For those crawling, Leg Huggers protect knees and legs from scrapes or abrasions from hard surfaces. Toddlers love their style and individuality when accessorizing outfits. Moms appreciate them for potty training and quick access.

FEATURES:

- perfect for crawling on hard surfaces
- easy access for potty training
- stay on and always comfortable
- super stretchy, so they don't cut off circulation even in chunky thighs
- if your child outgrows the Leg Huggers they can be used as arm warmers
- made with sustainable bamboo fibers:
* UV protective
* Odor Resistant
* Biodegradable
* Antibacterial - One size fits all
- affordable: just $9.99 a pair!

Bamboo is a sustainable resource and it is more anti-bacterial than other fabrics. It wicks moisture away, which is great for circulation and skin, preventing over-heating or chills from trapped-in moisture. Bamboo clothing is also more breathable, comfortable and has better thermal regulation than cotton, wool, or synthetic fibers, keeping baby cooler, drier and more comfortable. In addition, Bamboo is hypoallergenic, and its organic, natural fiber properties make it non-irritating to even the most sensitive skin. Bamboo apparel also protects you from UV rays, naturally. If all that weren't enough, bamboo apparel is good for our ecosystems because it does not require pesticides, insecticides, or fertilizers, and does not involve the use of genetically modified organisms; and bamboo fibers are biodegradable.

Simple Tips for making Homemade Fish Sticks

My kids love fish sticks, but I won't go near any of the prepackaged stuff. I mean...have you read the ingredient labels on those frozen packs? yikes!
I mean...how difficult can it be to make them from scratch? right?
I made a batch last weekend, they were ok, but next time I want to make them really good. Finger licking good! :-) For that I need to learn the fundamentals of making good homemade fish sticks and of course Mark Bittman is my go-to guy for simple cooking techniques

Getty Images

His teachings are simple: know your fish, know your coatings, know your cooking methods; and the rest is just a matter of personal taste. Simple right!
Know your fish:
Fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel are too oily and won't work; flounder and most trout are too thin and delicate for making fish sticks. The best fish for this purpose are pollock, cod, Pacific halibut, farm-raised catfish, even locally caught swordfish all work brilliantly and are sustainable choices as well.  Bittman recommends buying a piece that looks good, "with no drying or browning; fish that has been frozen at sea and well-handled (no freezer burn) is a good alternative."

Know your coatings and your cooking methods:
I'm not a fan of deep-frying, which immediately eliminates pancake-like or beer-based batters and the much-beloved tempura. For shallow-frying there are many coating options, ranging from a dusting of flour or cornmeal to breadcrumbs (specially for oven frying), to a super-light egg coating.

No matter which coating you choose, unless you want to bake the sticks (recipe below) the procedure is the same: Cut the fish, lay out the coating, get your oil hot, and cook quickly: by the time the coating is golden, the fish is ready to turn.

Fast Fish Sticks (shallow frying)
by Mark Bittman

Serves 4

Ingredients

    • About 1 1/2 pounds boneless, firm, not-too-oily fish, like cod, pollock, swordfish, or catfish
    • salt and pepper
    • Cornmeal (or flour) for dredging
    • Olive oil as needed
    • Lemon wedges or sauce of your choice for serving

Directions

In a non-stick or well-seasoned skillet, add olive oil to a depth of about 1/8-inch and turn the heat to medium. Cut the fish into sticks about 1/2-inch thick and sprinkle them with salt and pepper. Put a pile of cornmeal on a plate.
The oil is ready when a pinch of cornmeal sizzle instantly when you drop it in there. (If it instantly sizzles, turns brown, and sinks to the bottom the oil is too hot; turn the heat off and wait a couple of minutes before turning it on again.)
Turn the fish sticks in the cornmeal, trying to get it to adhere to every bit of each side but not fretting about the thickness of the coating. As each stick is done, add it to the oil. ; the amount that adheres is right.
For lightly Battered Fish Sticks: For the coating, prepare a pile of flour (cake flour is best, but if you don't have it all-purpose is fine) and a bowl with 2 or 3 beaten eggs. Dredge each fish stick in the flour, then in the egg, then put it in the pan immediately. Cook as above.

Fish Sticks (Oven Fried)

by Mark Bittman

Serves 4

Ingredients

    • About 1 1/2 pounds firm filleted fish, like cod, pollock, swordfish, or catfish
    • 1 1/2 cups milk, buttermilk, or yogurt
    • Bread crumbs, preferably fresh, for dredging
    • Salt and pepper
    • 3 tablespoons melted butter or extra virgin olive oil
    • Lemon wedges or sauce of your choice for serving

Directions

Cut the fish into sticks about 1/2-inch thick; soak in the milk while you heat the oven to 450°F. Put the bread crumbs on a plate and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
When the oven is hot, pull the fish from the milk and let it drain a bit. Dredge the still-wet fish in the bread crumbs, patting them to make sure they adhere. Drizzle a little of the butter or oil over the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch baking pan or large rimmed baking sheet, then lay the fish sticks in the pan. Drizzle with the remaining butter or oil.
Bake near the top of the oven for about 10 minutes, depending on the thickness; the fish will be crisp on the outside and tender and opaque when done. Serve immediately.

Baby Sling & Carrier Manufacturers' Press Release on Baby Slings Warning

This is a copy of the press release issued by baby sling and carrier manufacturers after the CPSC Baby Slings warning:

Not All Slings Are Created Equally: Baby Sling & Carrier Manufacturers Speak Out On Baby Sling Safety Warning

Baby sling & carrier manufacturers speak out on baby sling safety warning and Associated Press article.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) March 11, 2010 -- With the publication of an Associated Press article regarding the CPSC government warning on baby slings and the Consumers Union’s concerns about “bag-style” slings, the companies co-sponsoring this release are taking a stand to help educate the public on the differences between safe vs. unsafe baby slings and carriers as detailed below.
News Image
The ancient practice of babywearing made its way into western culture in the 1960s and its popularity with American consumers has grown because of its vast benefits. Unfortunately, this has led to the creation of several potentially unsafe baby slings and carriers. Slings and carriers of concern are popularly categorized under the token term “bag-style” slings. In “bag-style” slings, the deep pouch where baby sits puts the baby in a potentially suffocating curved or “C” like position. Also, excessive fabric with an elasticized edge may cover baby’s face inhibiting breathing. Furthermore, the design may cause the baby’s face to turn in toward a caregiver’s body, potentially smothering the baby.
In contrast, shallow pouch-style slings, ring slings, mei tais and wraps hold baby in proper alignment and they fit snugly by design and instruction. They have been engineered, developed and tested by parents, often the manufacturers themselves with their own children. These carriers are often simple and without gimmicks. Dedicated and concerned manufacturers of these types of safe slings and carriers have sponsored this release.
Because of the popularity and gaining market share of small baby carrier companies, a few years ago the Juvenile Products Manufactures Association (JPMA) was approached by a handful of these companies asking for a standard to be created. These companies were initially alarmed by the creation of some carriers, mostly by home crafters, fashioned from materials unsuitable for baby products. Soon after, M’liss Stelzer, a pediatric nurse, did an oxygenation study discovering a potential link between infant deaths and “bag-style” style slings therefore creating even more need for the standard as well as further study.
Upon this need the ASTM, an internationally recognized creator of standards for consumer products and test procedures, created a subcommittee for Sling Carrier Standards. The ASTM Subcommittee is made up of manufacturers, consumer advocates and government officials from the US and Canada including members of the CPSC. The subcommittee started writing the standard two years ago. In this time more deaths have occurred, all linked to the “bag-style” sling being reported by Jennifer Kerr, a writer for the Associated Press in the article referenced in the first line of this release. This has alerted the CPSC to take necessary action and issue this warning.
In well-designed products, babywearing is not only safe, but is actually very beneficial when done properly. Studies have shown that quality baby slings and carriers have been shown to save lives, improve health, decrease crying, increase IQ, and facilitate breastfeeding and bonding. For examples of these cases and further reading see “Increased Carrying Reduces Infant Crying: A Randomized Controlled Trial” an article written by Urs A. Hunziker MD and Ronald G. Barr MDCM, FRCP(C), “Saving My Baby” a blog post written on Fierce Mama’s Blog by Sarah Kaganovsky and Dr. Maria Blois’s book Babywearing.
Studies have also shown that worn babies are happier and spend more time in the quiet alert phase. In this phase they benefit more than their non-worn peers in language development and knowledge acquisition. Babywearing also helps babies sleep better, and physical needs, including breastfeeding, are met more quickly by a close, responsive parent. Millions of babies over time have been worn to their benefit making baby slings and carriers more of a necessity than the often-publicized fashion accessory. (Source La Leche League International)
The vast benefits of babywearing should not be disregarded with the report of incidents from “bag-style” slings. The sponsors of this release make safer baby slings and carriers and have been active in the standard writing process and are dedicated to safety through engineering. “We see this as an opportunity to reach out and educate American consumers. We hope to provide valuable information allowing parents and caregivers to not only make informed buying decisions, but also to increase the awareness of how to properly wear children, especially babies, in baby slings and carriers,” says Kristen DeRocha, ASTM Subcommittee Chair. The Associated Press article regarding the CPSC warning gives proof to the growing popularity of baby slings and carriers and validates the need for education.
Several trusted websites exist to aid in the education of babywearing for caregivers and new parents. To name a few: TheBabywearer.com, the Facebook fan page for Babywearing Safety, Mothering.com and LaLecheLeague.org.

This press release was sponsored by:
Hotslings, Maya Wrap, Moby Wrap, Wrapsody, Gypsymama, Together Be, Kangaroo Korner, Taylormade Slings, Scootababy, Bellala Baby, Catbird Baby, SlingEZee, ZoloWear, HAVA, SlingRings and Sakura Bloom

Hotslings seeks to educate people after CPSC Baby Sling warning

Hotslings is stating that despite many circulating rumors, there is not a recall on any brand of baby slings.

Upon the release of the CPSC government warning Hotslings is reaching out to its customers with the following information: "The government's warning notes that care should be taken when placing babies in the cradle position in all baby slings. The CPSC has also mandated that a standard be created for all sling carriers by the ASTM Subcommittee for Sling Carrier Standards." The owner and creator of Hotslings, Kristen DeRocha, has been working for 2 years with the CPSC and is the ASTM Subcommittee Chair."

"Hotslings is dedicated to creating quality products that foster bonding between parent and baby and stand behind the CPSC's warning." Hotslings is working to educate American Consumers and in an effort to do so they wrote and co-sponsored a press release to make people aware of the different types of slings and what makes a sling safer. You can read the whole release here:

http://www.prweb.com/releases/2010/03/prweb3718984.htm

Also, Hotslings has begun including the drawings for positioning, seen in the CPSC's warning, in all new Hotslings shipments. These drawings were initially created by the Hotslings and Maya Wrap team and submitted as a instructional requirement to the ASTM. The link below is the official government warning.

Guest Blogger: Trina O’Boyle from O'boy Organic

I was thrilled when Best Baby Organics asked me to be a guest blogger. Thank you in advance
for this great opportunity to showcase my baby O'Boy! Organic.

When I became pregnant with Jackson, my first child (I am now a proud mother of two young,
vibrant boys – 2 years old & 4 years old), I wanted to make sure he began his life with
healthy, organic foods free of pesticides and preservatives. Eating this way would help support
the natural progress of his still developing little body without polluting it with chemicals that
could be harmful to that development. My initial research found that my options were limited to
buying over-processed jarred food or to make his food myself. My desire to feed my baby
properly along with my love for cooking made that decision a no-brainer – I would make his
food myself. To my pleasant surprise, I found the process to be quite simple, efficient, and cost
effective! I also found great satisfaction watching him, and later my younger son Finnegan,
enjoy exploring these fresh new tastes knowing that he was eating the best ingredients I could
find and tasting the meal to its fullest as organic ingredients generally have much more flavor
than non-organic! Jackson took to it so well that, at his first birthday party, he was more inter-
ested in eating the organic fruit than the decorated the cake.

The benefits of eating this way don’t just stop at the nutrition your youngster will receive; as a
former Montessori school teacher, I would cook with my school children (as well as my own
children at home) as it not only gets them involved with what they are eating, but it also helps
with the development of fine motor skills, it boosts self confidence, and it helps create the foun-
dation for a healthy and nutritious lifestyle. This is why I created the Children’s Cooking
Parties – to create a fun learning experience for both the children and their parents.

O’Boy! Organic is an extension of my life’s work as a mother and a teacher. All of the things
that I will provide to you and your family are the same things I have been providing to my family
and school children for years. My objective is to show parents and children that eating
homemade organic food is easy and fun by providing tips and recipes to keep the magic I have
experienced alive in your own homes as your child grows and grows.

At O’Boy! We provide different services for families to make their life easier and FUN too.

Cooking Classes for Mommies

fun evening of food making. All ingredients are fresh, local and

Kids Cooking Parties
If you are looking for a new way to celebrate your child's next
birthday or if you are looking for a party idea, consider the fun of
having a kids cooking party. Kids love creating and eating that which
they have made. Whether they are boys or girls they will love the
idea of being chefs for the day. We will give them an apron, hat and al-
low the children to have a real hands on cooking experience!

This is one of my favorite recipes that I make weekly for my boys, I bet you didn’t know how
much you could pack into a pancake!

Pancakes with a BUNCH!
Ingredients
1 cup of whole wheat Pancake Mix
1/2 cup of organic milk
1 egg
2 TB of oil
6-8 oz of Sweet Potato purée
1/2 cup of quick organic or Irish oats
1-2 banana (sliced and quartered)
1/2 –1 cup of fresh or frozen blueberries
1-2 TB of flax seed
1-2 TB of wheat germ
1-2 TB of nutritional yeast

Preparation
Mix all ingredients together and let sit for 5 minutes, if you feel the mixture is too thick then add
more milk or water. Cook on griddle until done on both sides. You can serve right away or
place them in the freezer and reheat when your little one wants a pancake.

** You can also use Squash Puree, Spinach Puree, Cauliflower Puree instead of the Sweet

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!
From the Best Baby Organics Team
Today is the day you have to wear the color Green or you'll get pinched! But did you know that the holiday is named after Saint Patrick (circa AD 387-461), the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland? It began as a purely Christian holiday and became an official feast day in the early 1600s. However, it has gradually become more of a secular celebration of Ireland's culture. It is a public holiday on the island of Ireland; including Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. It is also widely celebrated in places where there are large numbers of Irish immigrants and their offspring - this includes Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and Montserrat, among others. (information taken from Wikipedia.com). Whatever you do today to celebrate, Best Baby Organics wishes you the luck of the Irish!

Free Fertilaid for Women - Hosted by Emily's Latest - Ends 3/26/2010

Emily is hosting our Fertilaid giveaway on her blog.

We are following her journey as she tries to conceive and start a little family. Our best wishes go to Emily and her husband and we hope to hear baby news from Canada soon :-)

Not long ago Emily did a very informative Fertilaid review. Here's a bit of it:

"Now, I’ve been taking prenatal vitamins since August of 2008, so I know the routine. I have mainly stuck to the generic version. One big, heavy, rock hard pill every morning. I’m okay with that. So what makes FertilAid different?
It’s more than just a multivitamin. FertilAid for Women is a preconception vitamin that contains all the essential vitamins (including the crucial folic acid), but also contains herbs that regulate the monthly cycle. Have I mentioned that my cycle is a disaster? I was between 31-34 days before my first pregnancy, but my last few cycles have ranged from 31-38 days. So this for me (and for many women with irregular cycles like me, or PCOS) has a lot of appeal. I did a little research on what’s in there. Let’s take a look at these herbs (click on the numbers for sources)
  • Red Clover Blossom Extract: Red clover is considered to be a phytoestrogenic herb, useful in restoring estrogen balance in women. 1
  • Siberian Ginseng: is thought to stimulate the immune system (and) to help the body better cope with stress, either mental or physical… Siberian ginseng is generally considered safe when used as directed. However, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take Siberian ginseng.2 This is important to note. FertilAid does state on the bottle that it should be stopped when pregnancy is confirmed.
  • Vitex, or Chaste Tree Berry: acts on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands by increasing luteinizing hormone (LH) production and mildly inhibiting the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). This results in a shift in the ratio of estrogen to progesterone, with a rise in progesterone.3 You can imagine how that would be helpful in regulating periods and helping with PCOS. Again, because of its complex hormonal actions, chaste tree is not recommended for use during pregnancy.4 Another thing to note is that this is not an immediate effect – it may take several months to really have an impact.
  • Ginkgo Biloba extract: I think this is included as it is believed to improve blood flow. Again, pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take gingko. 5
Okay, so you can see that these herbs might be beneficial to a woman trying to conceive. Regulating hormones, improving blood flow, reducing stress – all great for the wannabe mama. I’m kind of hesitant to trust in herbals – my Western upbringing includes a skeptic’s view of these things. Much as I like the idea, I find I don’t have a lot of faith. But I’m willing to give it a try.
The capsules themselves are pale green, very light in weight (easy to swallow), and made with a vegetable protein casing – which, as a vegetarian, I was very happy about (many pill capsules are made with gelatin, which is essentially made from boiling bones and hoofs. Ick.). You take one capsule three times a day, which distributes the vitamins more evenly than taking one giant dose once a day. Your body eliminates vitamins it can’t absorb, so it makes sense to me that a massive dose once a day is less effective than three smaller doses. I simply took one with each meal. I was worried that I’d forget to take them, but in a month (90 pills), I only missed four. Not bad. For the record, I did ask my OB/gyn for his opinion on multi-dose vitamins over single-dose, and he didn’t really weigh in one side or the other." Belly Bandit featured on Pregnancy & Newborn March Issue

In case you needed more reasons to start wearing a Belly Bandit, read what Pregnancy & Newborn just published in its March issue

Lust vs. Must
"Transforming the postpartum flab back into your regularly chiseled abs isn't easy, and if you're anything like the moms we know, you'll gladly accept some help. There's always the tummy tuck route, but if you're looking for a less expensive, less invasive option, give the Belly Bandit a try.
Worn under (or even over) your clothing, the belly wrap provides support as it helps get your stomach back to its pre-baby shape."

Moroccan Oil - magic potion for damaged hair

Some women are blessed with shiny healthy hair. My hair used to be shiny and full of life  until babies arrived. Something happened after giving birth which caused my hair not to regain its original bounciness and manageability. Did this also happen to any of you?

I eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of fluids everyday to keep hydrated and exercise every week, but my hair needs more than just a healthy lifestyle I guess. I've been looking for a "magic potion" that will magically fix my hair and the thing that reportedly comes closest to being this "magic potion" is Moroccan oil. Moroccan oil is another name for Argan oil which is made from the kernels of argan tree fruit that grow almost exclusively in Morocco. Supposedly the oil is pressed from undigested argan nuts plucked from the poop of Moroccan goats that actually climb the trees to eat the nuts and then...well sounds like these goats are not chewing their food properly.
But let's get back to the hair miracle potion I'm after: I did investigate this Moroccan oil thing and found many commercially available hair products claiming to contain Moroccan oil and they are EXPENSIVE!! wouldn't mind paying the price if these products would actually contain Moroccan oil, but if you take the time to read the ingredient labels, turns out that the moroccan oil content is just a small fraction of the total content. So...being the DIY trooper I am, found the real deal and hope all you ladies looking for better hair days will try this at home:

(found on a great site I'm falling in love with: GreenChiCafe.com)
Miraculous Moroccan Hair Oil - DIY Diva
haircomb2
"I always love an exotic hair beauty formula, so I began to look around on the Internet, sure that I could find a green, do-it-yourself (DIY) version of Moroccan oil if I looked hard enough.
Sure enough, I began to hone in on information about Moroccan oil for hair, and to understand its fame. Better yet, I found a quick substitute that some of you may even have in your home; I did.
The reason Moroccan oil is considered so miraculous as a hair treatment is that it deeply moisturizes dry hair without making the hair greasy. At the same time it gives the hair a stunning shine, reduces frizz, and gives elasticity. Generic Moroccan oil is also known as Argan oil from the nuts of a tree native to Morocco. The oil is exceptionally rich in vitamin E, essential fatty acids Omega 3 and 6, squalene, cartontenes, and more. It is used medicinally as well as for cosmetic and personal care purposes. The oil is reported to help treat Psoriasis.
Argan oil is considered to be similar to Emu oil, and also jojoba. Emu oil is derived from a bird. Jojoba is a liquid wax derived from a shrub. Jojoba is easily available (indeed, I have some), and this research into Moroccan oil has taught me attributes about it that I did not know. Pure Argan oil is available in the U.S. online, and here is one source, Argan Oils,  from women cooperatives.
How to use? While your hair is still wet after washing, dab some on your hands, rub them together and then through your hair. Dry as usual. What  a wonderful hair conditioner."

when buying new furniture look for green and sustainable manufacturing

I'm finding myself in the market for a new sectional sofa. Where do I start?

When shopping for new furniture keep in mind the eco-friendliness and the sustainability of the product. Choose to buy from manufacturers who care about our environment. Sustainlane has an informative page listing labels and badges that identify manufacturers who care about the environment and who adhere to responsible manufacturing. See the highlights below:

Company membership in eco friendly organizations indicates that a manufacturer cares. These suppliers are moving in sustainable directions, sharing ideas and meeting organizational standards. These labels demonstrate a company's eco consciousness. The labels are an indication that your purchase supports their efforts towards more earth friendly products. Here are some examples.

The Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC) This program is managed and annually audited by an independent third party that has absolutely no direct or indirect association with members. Their mission is to promote and recognize environmental stewardship and sustainability.

RugMark randomly inspects the looms of companies that agree to employ adults only. Through independent certification and rigorous inspections you know your rug is child-labor-free. Moreover, RugMark has freed more than 3,000 children from weaving looms. Their educational programs provide children with rehabilitation, daycare, literacy programs, formal schooling and vocational training.

GREENGUARD's Environmental Institute (GEI) mission is to improve public health and quality of life through programs thatimprove indoor air. In accordance with that mission, GEI currently has three third-party certification programs: Indoor Air Quality, Children & Schools and Building Construction Building. GEI measures chemical emissions including formaldehyde, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), respirable particles, ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon dioxide emissions.

ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. Results are already adding up. Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved enough energy in 2007 alone to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 27 million cars — all while saving $16 billion on their utility bills. Energy Star also lists rebates and special offers. Check out these money saving offers before any major purchase.

U.S. Green Building Council sponsors the LEEDS certification and rating system. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEEDS homes have lower energy and water bills, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and fewer problems with mold, mildew and other indoor toxins. See their Green Home Guide for interesting tips and the U.S. Green Building Council's videos. Part of this rating system includes commercial furnishings.

American Home Furnishings Alliance’s Enhancing Furniture’s Environmental Culture (EFEC) program. This program is self designed, supported, and self policed by the AHFA and their trade association membership. EFEC is a voluntary environmental management system (EMS) for furniture manufacturers. Many state regulatory agency benefits encourage member participation. This program provides internal and external benefits that create eco friendly options for customers. American Drew and Stanley have completed the EFEC program.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) was established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations. More than 100 million forest worldwide were certified to FSC standards in April 2008, distributed over 79 countries.

Watch Lou Dobbs talk about BPA in plastic bottles:

We are in the process of adding a new line of non-toxic baby bottles and sippy cups to our ever growing number of product offerings. As usual we do a lot of research and gather all the facts before expanding our product lines and in the case of baby bottles and sippy cups we wanted to know more about BPA (Bisphenol A), the artificial sex hormone that is a core component in thousands of plastic products sold in the USA, including baby plastic bottles and sippy cups. This chemical is blamed for all kinds of ailments and many health advocates want it completely removed from the market. Watch Lou Dobbs talk about BPA in plastic bottles:
