Not long ago Emily did a very informative Fertilaid review. Here's a bit of it:

"Now, I’ve been taking prenatal vitamins since August of 2008, so I know the routine. I have mainly stuck to the generic version. One big, heavy, rock hard pill every morning. I’m okay with that. So what makes FertilAid different?

It’s more than just a multivitamin. FertilAid for Women is a preconception vitamin that contains all the essential vitamins (including the crucial folic acid), but also contains herbs that regulate the monthly cycle. Have I mentioned that my cycle is a disaster? I was between 31-34 days before my first pregnancy, but my last few cycles have ranged from 31-38 days. So this for me (and for many women with irregular cycles like me, or PCOS) has a lot of appeal. I did a little research on what’s in there. Let’s take a look at these herbs (click on the numbers for sources)

• Red Clover Blossom Extract: Red clover is considered… to be a phytoestrogenic herb, useful in restoring estrogen balance in women. 1
• Siberian Ginseng: is …thought to stimulate the immune system (and) to help the body better cope with stress, either mental or physical… Siberian ginseng is generally considered safe when used as directed. However, …women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take Siberian ginseng.2 This is important to note. FertilAid does state on the bottle that it should be stopped when pregnancy is confirmed.
• Vitex, or Chaste Tree Berry: acts on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands by increasing luteinizing hormone (LH) production and mildly inhibiting the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). This results in a shift in the ratio of estrogen to progesterone, with a rise in progesterone.3 You can imagine how that would be helpful in regulating periods and helping with PCOS. Again, because of its complex hormonal actions, chaste tree is not recommended for use during pregnancy.4 Another thing to note is that this is not an immediate effect – it may take several months to really have an impact.
• Ginkgo Biloba extract: I think this is included as it is believed to improve blood flow. Again, pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take gingko. 5

Okay, so you can see that these herbs might be beneficial to a woman trying to conceive. Regulating hormones, improving blood flow, reducing stress – all great for the wannabe mama. I’m kind of hesitant to trust in herbals – my Western upbringing includes a skeptic’s view of these things. Much as I like the idea, I find I don’t have a lot of faith. But I’m willing to give it a try.

The capsules themselves are pale green, very light in weight (easy to swallow), and made with a vegetable protein casing – which, as a vegetarian, I was very happy about (many pill capsules are made with gelatin, which is essentially made from boiling bones and hoofs. Ick.). You take one capsule three times a day, which distributes the vitamins more evenly than taking one giant dose once a day. Your body eliminates vitamins it can’t absorb, so it makes sense to me that a massive dose once a day is less effective than three smaller doses. I simply took one with each meal. I was worried that I’d forget to take them, but in a month (90 pills), I only missed four. Not bad. For the record, I did ask my OB/gyn for his opinion on multi-dose vitamins over single-dose, and he didn’t really weigh in one side or the other." These were cute,cute cute! These pants are created with a little extra room where it counts for babies in cloth diapers. There are a few diapers that have a little bit too much bulk for me to slide Little L's pants over. I was pretty excited about the concept and even more excited after we tried them! The fabric was super soft and unique. We don't have any little man pants in the closet that are like them. I showed my mom the pants and she couldn't wait to put them on the little guy. "Look at the Butt!" it has a really cute smiley face on the behind! So I rushed off to find my fluffiest diaper and we hurriedly wriggled LL into his new pants. Oh. My. Goodness. It was too cute for words! I am positive LL loved them just as much as we did, as he did not want his new pants off all day. He got pretty upset during every diaper change, and made sure we slipped his pants back on when we were finished!

The Why’s of Babywearing & Giveaway from Best Baby Organics

Babywearing is a trend on the rise, but in fact babywearing is an ancient tradition. It is a primal maternal instinct to carry our babies. With the help of a babywearing device (like the Moby Wrap or Sleepy Wrap), it is also a modern convenience. You may remember that I LOVE using my Moby Wrap with my little one. So, “Why wear my baby?” you ask …
GOOD FOR BABY:

• Newborn are used to being in the womb and the shock of going from constant to little contact can be an unsettling.
• Being in sling/carrier with motion from your movement is womb-like and very comforting for baby.
• That dreaded “arsenic hour” always seems to fall during dinner prep time (the Moby/Sleepy is only carrier I’d feel safe using while cooking).
• Soothing touch and being able to see what’s going on make a needy baby a happy baby.
• Toddlers also enjoy the comfort of being close to mom/dad.

NEED TO BACK THAT UP?

Research shows that babies worn by their mothers (and fathers) cry less; and that babies develop a sense of secrity and trust – meaning they will become independent at an earlier age.

GOOD FOR MOM, TOO:
I didn’t want to leave my baby, not even an arms-length away, after giving birth. Since newborns sleep so much, I couldn’t very well stay in bed all day – I had another child to care for! Wearing my baby was a great way for me to feel at ease. Now, the baby is a year old and I still wear her almost daily. She feels great seeing everything I’m doing, and feels safe and secure in public (since she is very wary of strangers). And I don’t have to lug a heavy stroller everywhere I go!
Two more great reasons?  (1)Nursing a baby while going on with your daily life is a cinch while carrying baby in a sling/wrap.  And, (2) babywearing even helps prevent postpartum depression!
Now that I’ve given you no reason to not wear your baby, you want to get started right? Wrap carriers are by far my favorite way tote baby around (and I’ve tried them ALL). There are so many great ways to carry your baby or toddler in one of these because it wraps different ways for different positions. It is so nice to have a wrap that can be used from infant to toddler, and even with multiples (whether it be twins or 2 different aged little ones). I am obsessive about finding durable and well made shoes for my kids. The shoes I buy for them MUST be made of leather in and out and if they are eco-friendly, I'm totally sold!!

Organic Treatment for Baby's Congestion

It's been bitterly cold these past days in Miami. Actually, we are braving our coldest cold snap in almost a decade with the lowest temperatures in the 30's and 40's. Very unusual for Miami!, but the most unusual part is that the cold weather seems to be sticking around. Normally, we have a cold day in the 40's or 50's, everyone bundles up, and the next day we go back to the 80's. But this time is different. Arctic cold front after Arctic cold front are really dropping the temperatures and keeping them low for us. I can only imagine what folks in the rest of country are going through with below zero temperatures.

So, my 18 month old has been teething like crazy these past months and now with the cold weather, she's also extra congested. It breaks my heart to see her sick. She's usually full of energy, but these days she's not herself. Being the organic freak I am, I totally refuse to give my daughter any unnecessary drugs that can cause side effects and do more damage than good. I always go the natural way and do as my mom did for me when I was little. The best way to treat a cold in our home is simple:
- warm Chicken Soup
- warm herbal tea
- lots of natural juice
- lots of rest
- lots of love
- Plus a warm bath and a nice chest rub with "magic potion" (that's what my mom used to call it). Back then my mom would use a menthol based chest rub. Now I have my own magic potions :-)
