Top 10 tips for a great pregnancy

Check out these tips for a great pregnancy

1) For a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby make sure you nourish your body
Plan ahead and improve your eating habits. Prior to conception make sure you are getting enough Folic Acid in your diet (about 0.4 milligrams of folic acid every day) Adequate folic acid intake is very important before conception and at least 3 months afterward to potentially reduce the risk of having a fetus with a neural tube defect. More details here.
During pregnancy choose really good prenatal vitamins and don't forget to take them everyday.
I never took them on an empty stomach as having an empty stomach always made me nauseous.

2) Get ready to expand - Prevent Stretch Marks
Poor nutrition also affects the health of your skin and increases the chances of getting those horrible stretch marks. Reduce those chances by eating foods high in vital nutrients and low in saturated fats and cholesterol. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables and keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water and cutting back on caffeine. Besides good nutrition, another way to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy is to apply a good non-toxic formula to the skin.  Even before conception start applying lots and lots of anti stretch mark stuff. I did this months in advance. I wanted to prepare my belly for the skin stretching marathon in the months ahead. I love the organic OG Mama Moisture Oil, Belly Polish, and Belly Butter that keep a mama's skin supple and elastic.

3) Avoid morning sickness
Eat a good healthy breakfast every morning. My theory is full belly = no morning sickness.
One time I left the house without eating breakfast and got so sick while doing 60 mph on the highway. Had to pull over and was lucky to find a plastic bag under the passanger's seat. Since that day, I made sure to never starve my pregnant body again.

4) Healthy snacks
For midday and mid-afternoon.
My favorite was a mix of dry apricots and nuts like peanuts and almonds.

5) Elevate feet when sitting for prolonged periods
If you have to work at a desk all day or if you need to be sitting for long periods of time, make sure you keep your feet elevated to promote circulation and avoid swelling. Working in the office I always had an upside down paper waste basket under the desk as a foot rest.

6) Save on Maternity Clothing
Buy a good Maternity Belly Band or Tube to help you transition into maternity clothes. I was able to wear my normal hip hugger jeans and pants during the first trimester and also well into the second. When you can no longer button up or zip up your pants, simply unbutton them and continue to wear them with the help of a Bella Band or Belly Band. You wear the band over your pants, jeans, shorts, or skirts and the band will cover your stomach while keeping the unbuttoned garments also covered and in place. These bands are very fashionable and a great money saver, since you don't have to buy as many maternity clothes.

7) Drop the G-strings
If all you have is dental floss type lingerie, it's time to go shopping for some comfy all cotton panties.
Many pregnant women like to wear those sexy thongs, but the G-string type underwear increases the risk of testing positive for strep B. So why risk it?

8) Exercise Connect & Socialize: Try Prenatal Yoga
The advantages are many!
You get to exercise your body and connect with baby at the same time plus you meet other pregnant moms in your area.

9) Look your best during labor and delivery
After 9 months of pregnancy you deserve to look great. Bring your own delivery gown to the hospital or to the birthing center. Look fabulous and take lots of pictures holding baby and wearing your own beautiful gownie.

10) Regain your shape after baby arrives
By now you probably have heard all about the Belly Bandit.
The Belly Bandit is a post-pregnancy stomach binding wrap that will help you shrink back to your pre-pregnant shape fast!
Post-partum stomach binding has been practiced for centuries by women from many cultures around the world. This practice is now being embraced by American women as well, as more and more Hollywood celebrities continue to report on the slimming benefits they received from wearing the Belly Bandit after delivering their babies.

What They Forgot To Tell You About Pregnancy

One of our twitter friends sent a link to this big list of things "they forgot to tell you about pregnancy".
If you are thinking about having a baby, don't read this list :-)
If you are already pregnant, read the list and laugh with us :-)
This list was posted on the pregnancy-calendars.net site

About Pregnancy What it feels like to have your ribs used as footrests...from the inside.
That sometimes it appears like you have a strange alien creature with 10 arms and legs about to burst out your belly button...ewww!!
That you will probably want to go out and buy a box of adult diapers for the amount of times you end up peeing in your underwear while coughing, sneezing, laughing or throwing up.
That by the end of your pregnancy, you will need a forklift to help get you off the couch or bed (or at least one really strong person).
That even the silliest of things will make you cry your eyes out.
How many times you will have to call the doctor about all your super embarrassing female questions.
That the toilet will become your new "best friend" or "second home" for at least one reason or another.
That you don't really know the meaning of a full bladder until you've had to do an ultrasound....or been kicked there from the inside.
How bad those mood swings really can be...watch out everyone!
That you will get so big, you will have to stand sideways when washing dishes, doing laundry or brushing your teeth.
That everybody else around you apparently is a pregnancy expert, especially your mother in law.
That you won't be cutting your own toenails for quite a few months if you can't get anyone to help you.
Forget about shaving for quite a while too...unless you REALLY trust your partner!
That it becomes really hard to squat over the toilet with all that extra weight...talk about good leg exercises!
That the simplest of things, like walking up a flight of stairs or walking to get the mail, would make you feel like you really need a nap.
That people suddenly feel like they have the right to rub and pat your growing belly...like it's not attached to the rest of you.
That the word "discharge" would become a common part of your vocabulary....and the scary thing is...you won't be embarrassed!
That they just don't make sexy bras in DD's. It's all about support, support and more support!
Sexy underwear...you can forget those too! Comfort and cotton...that's it!
That you will never look at your husband quite the same again.
That your breasts start leaking BEFORE the baby is even here yet.
That you will cry when strangers say to you, "any day now?", when you are only 6 months along.
That whoever coined the term "morning sickness" didn't know what they were talking about. What it should be named is "morning, midday, afternoon, evening and night sickness".
What it actually feels like to be kicked or headbutted in the cervix..owww!!
That rolling over in bed from one side of your body to the other is a huge chore requiring lots of huffing and puffing.
That the sleepless nights begin BEFORE the baby is born.
That you had better buy some slip on shoes for when you get real big...unless you are going to have someone around to tie your shoes for you.
That you will spend so much time cleaning and re-cleaning the same exact things over and over again in preparation for the baby's arrival.
That you won't care how much of a pig you look like when you gobble down your second full plate of food...much to every one's amazement!
That memory is.....darn it! What was I going to say?
That you can both hysterically laugh and hysterically cry within the same few moments.
That your sense of smell is a lot better than it used to be, especially when it comes to the things that make you nauseous.
That you will start to break out in pimples like you are going through puberty all over again.

Eating Disorders, Fertility and Pregnancy

Women nowadays suffer from constant  exposure to "super thin beauty" and feel a lot of pressure to keep their bodies thin and toned. I mean...just open any magazine and what do you see?
ultra thin models, who are supposedly the ultimate standard of glamour and beauty - the ideal body type!
It's no wonder so many millions of people don't feel comfortable in their own skin and women specially may succumb to the pressure and develop eating disorders, like bulimia and anorexia.

So what happens when women with an eating disorder try to conceive a baby or are actually expecting a child?
"It is a growing and disturbing fact that more and more pregnant women are suffering eating disorders for fear of gaining too much of weight during pregnancy. By restricting calories and over exercising during pregnancy, you are consequently putting your own health and your baby’s health at risk."

If you are trying to conceive and have an eating disorder, your chances to conceive can be greatly reduced. If you are already pregnant and suffer from bulimia or anorexia, you should think of your baby first and recognize that you have a problem that can be fatal for your little one.

"Do not silently struggle with your eating disorder alone. Seeking professional help or confiding in family and friends, by no means will make you a bad mother in their eyes. The earlier you have the help of your support group and medical treatment, the better are your chances of successfully dealing with it. "

Not going back to work after baby is born

Ok, so everyone in the office (boss included) is convinced that you'll be back after baby pops out. You told them so!
But deep inside you are still not sure that will be the case.
So...are you truly having trouble deciding or are you just hoping to abuse the system and take full advantage of your maternity leave/short term disability benefits?

The reality is that going back to work after baby arrives can be a difficult decision for many working pregnant women. Many factors play a role in the decision making process, and in most cases, finances can be the main factor. Many times women will decide not to go back, even after telling their boss to expect them back. In cases like these, how, when, and do you inform your boss about your change of heart?

AlphaMom.com had an article on this subject not too long ago. Their article is below and you can also go to the AlphaMom site to read actual comments and reactions to the topic:

When You're Not Going Back

"Okay. So I've been reading up on this topic for a couple weeks now. It's an annoying topic to read up on, by the way, because there are no super-handy definitive how-to guides or even just a general consensus. There's a lot of bad advice and bad behavior and sweeping generalized vitriol being slung at innocent pregnant bystanders BECAUSE of that bad behavior. Mostly, though, it's a lot of families grappling with a complicated financial AND ethical AND personal issue: When do I tell my boss I'm not coming back to work? When do I make the decision not to go back to work? HOW do I make the decision not to go back to work?
PERFECT WORLD OPTION: You tell them as soon as you know you plan to stay home, with as much advance notice as possible. Because of course you just *know* that staying home is the right decision, probably right as your pregnancy tips into third trimester, leaving your employer with the perfect three-month window to hire and train your replacement.
Pros: Definitely the option that leaves your professional reputation most intact, since you will not be one of "those" pregnant women who take advantage of the company's leave benefits. And also, OH YEAH, you're not actually taking advantage of the company's leave benefits.
Cons: You may lose out on ANY paid maternity leave benefits, as your baby's birth would likely officially be your last day of employment, unless you arrange some part-time/freelance work afterward to tie up loose ends. You also run the risk of losing your health insurance, if the company decides to let you go ahead of time. (They can't fire you for being pregnant, but they CAN lay you off once you've announced your intention to leave.) That can leave you shelling out a fortune for COBRA or having to change plans and providers in the middle of a very medical-claim intensive time. This could cause some premature financial hardship, or the fear that you're burning your bridges BEFORE you cross them, especially if your situation changes after the baby is born (i.e. your partner loses their job and/or health insurance or some other financial crisis). And also, OH YEAH, not every woman can honestly make the decision "for sure" before the baby arrives.
Is It For You? If you have already made up your mind 100% to stay home, then legally and ethically, this is your option. Anything else veers into a muddy gray area of insurance scamming -- not to mention mega-unprofessional behavior. If you KNOW, your job should should know too. (And if you're hoping to keep the door open for freelance work or a return to the workforce some day, this is the best way to keep your company's trust.)
At my office, my boss asked for a meeting about two months before I was due to "discuss my plans." While I was planning to return to work, this would have been the perfect time to volunteer any plans to stay home (or desire to drop to part-time). Then I could have laid out some major projects and goals from my to-do list that I would like to finish, and offered to interview and train a replacement, positioning myself as a valuable team member for the next few months, greatly reducing the chances that they would have preemptively laid me off right then and there.
NOT-SO-PERFECT-WORLD OPTION: Tell them while you're still on leave that you won't be coming back as planned.
Pros: Benefits! Paid time off! No disruption in your health care through the birth and multiple well-baby visits! A chance to actually live the life of a SAHM before committing to it full-time! Plus, if you really hadn't made up your mind, you're not REALLY leaving them in the lurch and defrauding the system, right? Right?
Cons: Professional ire, disbelief at your claim that you simply changed your mind. Adding to the crap about pregnant women gaming the system and raising benefit premiums and no respect for their bosses and coworkers grumble grumble. Possibility of having to pay benefits back or even legal action, if your company is litigious or extremely strict about their leave policies.
Is It For You? Have you made up your mind for sure? Then: No. Maternity leave is, really, more of a retention benefit. It's not something they owe you, like a bank of unused vacation days. It's designed for women who DO plan to return to the workplace (however crappy of a design it is in this country).
But if you haven't made up your mind, you're not a terrible person for keeping the option of returning around. It's a HUGE decision -- life-changing, with life-long repercussions for your career and earnings power and retirement -- and I'm not sure the third trimester, before the reality of motherhood really hits you, is a fair time to expect every woman to know for sure. Plenty of women change their minds during maternity leave.
However, this is still different than say...waiting until week 11-and-a-half to tell them you aren't coming back. You should always, ALWAYS try to give them as much notice as you possibly can. Otherwise you're veering into a moral, ethical and legal gray area. It's also short-sighted to assume that you will be a SAHM forever and ever AMEN, and will never regret robbing your bridges at gunpoint before setting them on fire.
Internet message boards are full of people figuring out how to squeeze every last paid option before quitting, while others argue that hey, that's really not cool. Any discussion of a maternity leave overhaul in this country -- having companies provide longer leave, more generous leave times in hopes of upping retention -- brings out the folk who have a bitter story to tell about how a woman totally screwed their office over with her sneaky leave-taking when she clearly never had any intention of returning. Hey, I've got one of those stories too: A friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend of mine worked for a particularly troubled company that shuddered through round after round of layoffs. Late in her pregnancy, she was offered a severance package in order to save someone else's job, on the off chance she was planning to quit anyway. She turned it down, kept her job, went on leave...and then quit right before her scheduled return, as was her plan all along.
HOWEVER, of course, real life rarely sticks to schedule. If your baby was a preemie, or has health problems, or you were on bedrest and it all mucked with your leave time and nothing is what you expected it to be like six to 12 weeks later, then you may not have a choice. Similarly if your daycare falls through or your baby still won't take a bottle or your office announces it's moving four exits up your area's most congested highway.
If you do decide to stay home AFTER your baby is born: quit in person, with your HR person and your boss present. Offer to do WHATEVER YOU CAN to help with the transition -- working from home, coming in for interviews and meetings, organizing your files and to-do lists and job description. Anything to offset the perception of being all, "Thanks for the money, suckers!" before flouncing out the door.
I probably promised a good 25 different people on a good 25 different occasions that yes, I would be coming back to work after my leave. I don't think they believed me. So it was tempting to assume that quitting as soon as the short-term disability payments dried up was an okay option, because it's just "what everybody did." And despite all my promises, I WAS unsure about the decision. We were waitlisted at half a dozen daycares with no sure-fire spot in sight. I didn't know whether my salary would be worth the expense of childcare and commuting and even whether I was honestly all that interested in my job anymore, as freelance writing opportunities seemed like something possibly within my grasp. But I also didn't know if I'd like being home with a newborn day in and day out, whether I'd be breastfeeding or bottlefeeding or suffering from PPD or so madly in love with motherhood that I was willing to do whatever it took to soak up every second of it. I just wasn't ready to make the decision before the baby was born or even during my leave -- so I went back. Because I'd promised, and because I wasn't sure. A few months in and suddenly I was sure. Luckily, by that point, maternity leave benefits were a thing of the past, and I was able to quit like any other employee: two weeks' notice, letter of resignation, a contract arrangement to continue a slew of my duties from home until a replacement could be found and/or I was no longer interested in the work.
It remains the best -- and BY FAR, the toughest -- decision I've ever made.
Those of you who genuinely grappled with the decision of whether or not to return: What were the details behind YOUR decision, when and how did you tell your job, and how did it go? Any regrets? "

if you are thinking about having a home birth - get informed!

Having a home birth or a water birth at home or at a birthing center can be one of the most wonderful and touching experiences for expecting parents.
We had two incredibly perfect water births in a Miami maternity center and would recommend the experience to anyone open to the idea. But we also know that many people are very reluctant to consider this option and controversy is growing in the US about the health risks associated with the growing trend of women opting for home births to deliver their babies. Here's a video from the Today show. Watch it and make educated choices for yourself!

Guest Blogger: Lisa Mason-Reilly
The Benefits of Prenatal Yoga

Today we welcome a new guest blogger, Lisa from Prana Yoga Miami.

Lisa Mason-Reilly began her journey into Yoga at a young age having been blessed with a practicing mother. Growing up with an awareness of proper nutrition, meditation and balancing the physical body she is thankful to have these tools available to her throughout her life experience. Having had careers in high-end fashion as a model and buyer in a corporate capacity, she is all too aware of the stress and consuming affects associated with being "of the world". Although thankful for all the wonderful traveling opportunities and benefits of exposure to many different cultures, Lisa decided to take some time away from the frenetic corporate life and delve deeper within. Thanks to her dedicated teachers, she has emerged with more profound insight as to her purpose on this journey. She expresses that purpose through the creativity of being a mother, a teacher and a friend. Having recently completed the Teacher Training Certification Program at Prana Yoga in Coral Gables, Lisa dove in and began teaching Prenatal Yoga at the studio. She is thankful for the opportunity to share what has been so graciously shared with her and to continue to cultivate her devotion and love for Yoga.

The Benefits of Practicing Prenatal Yoga
by Guest Blogger Lisa Mason-Reilly

The Ancient Science and Philosophy of Yoga has been a wellspring of knowledge throughout centuries providing tools and wisdom for unifying the body, mind and spirit. This union which is attained through Asana practice (physical postures), Pranayama (breathing exercises), and Meditation, helps to balance the physical body systems, calm and focus the mind, and prepare the self for its higher purpose.

Prenatal Yoga offers many wonderful gifts to a pregnant woman and her baby. In addition to more physical strength and flexibility, the added benefits of breath awareness and meditation help to prepare the mother's mind and body for the normal and natural event of labor. Through this awareness also comes the opportunity to experience a deeper connection and bond with the growing baby. Many women that have practiced prenatal Yoga prior to delivery have reported having had a strong connection with their baby and an awareness during delivery that made the process of birth progress more smoothly. One mother commented that "with my increased awareness gained through practicing Yoga, I felt that during labor my daughter and I were communicating and really working together in the birthing process...to have these tools available to call on during labor is truly a blessing."

Prenatal Yoga offers safe and natural support as the demands and stress put on the body increase with pregnancy. There are asanas, meditations and pranayamas that provide relief for many common discomforts associated with pregnancy. For example, controlled movement of extremities and poses that allow feet above the heart help with swelling (edema) which is often times associated with pregnancy. Balasana (child's pose) is an asana that helps with fatigue and lower back discomfort, while standing poses and balancing poses help with leg stiffness and cramps. In addition, Pranayama, stillness and meditation can help with nausea and digestion. Many asanas help with increased circulation, gently working the cardiovascular system, toning the pelvic floor, and balancing the the body and mind to reduce stress and anxiety.

It is important to have permission from the doctor before beginning any exercise program when pregnant, and unless the mother has an existing Yoga practice, it is not recommended to begin an Asana practice until after the first trimester because of the higher risk of miscarriage during this period. But that doesn't mean that a pregnant woman can't begin practicing Yoga the moment she finds out she is pregnant, because Yoga does not just include the physical component, but is also comprised of breathing, meditation and awareness. Similarly, as a woman progresses further into her pregnancy and may not be able to participate in some of the more physical aspects of Yoga for various medical reasons, the benefits of meditation, visualization, and breath awareness will provide relief for any fear, worry or doubt that the mother may be experiencing and ultimately help to prepare the mother for labor.

Drawing on this ancient wisdom, mothers give their body, mind and spirit the opportunity to prepare a strong vessel to carry this new life and bring it forth into the world through a healthy and peaceful journey. In addition, mothers practicing prenatal Yoga are giving their babies an example from the beginning of how to live this life in harmony. What a Gift!

Om Shanti
