Baby Sling & Carrier Manufacturers' Press Release on Baby Slings Warning

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) March 11, 2010 -- With the publication of an Associated Press article regarding the CPSC government warning on baby slings and the Consumers Union’s concerns about “bag-style” slings, the companies co-sponsoring this release are taking a stand to help educate the public on the differences between safe vs. unsafe baby slings and carriers as detailed below.
The ancient practice of babywearing made its way into western culture in the 1960s and its popularity with American consumers has grown because of its vast benefits. Unfortunately, this has led to the creation of several potentially unsafe baby slings and carriers. Slings and carriers of concern are popularly categorized under the token term “bag-style” slings. In “bag-style” slings, the deep pouch where baby sits puts the baby in a potentially suffocating curved or “C” like position. Also, excessive fabric with an elasticized edge may cover baby’s face inhibiting breathing. Furthermore, the design may cause the baby’s face to turn in toward a caregiver’s body, potentially smothering the baby.
In contrast, shallow pouch-style slings, ring slings, mei tais and wraps hold baby in proper alignment and they fit snugly by design and instruction. They have been engineered, developed and tested by parents, often the manufacturers themselves with their own children. These carriers are often simple and without gimmicks. Dedicated and concerned manufacturers of these types of safe slings and carriers have sponsored this release.
Because of the popularity and gaining market share of small baby carrier companies, a few years ago the Juvenile Products Manufactures Association (JPMA) was approached by a handful of these companies asking for a standard to be created. These companies were initially alarmed by the creation of some carriers, mostly by home crafters, fashioned from materials unsuitable for baby products. Soon after, M’liss Stelzer, a pediatric nurse, did an oxygenation study discovering a potential link between infant deaths and “bag-style” style slings therefore creating even more need for the standard as well as further study.
Upon this need the ASTM, an internationally recognized creator of standards for consumer products and test procedures, created a subcommittee for Sling Carrier Standards. The ASTM Subcommittee is made up of manufacturers, consumer advocates and government officials from the US and Canada including members of the CPSC. The subcommittee started writing the standard two years ago. In this time more deaths have occurred, all linked to the “bag-style” sling being reported by Jennifer Kerr, a writer for the Associated Press in the article referenced in the first line of this release. This has alerted the CPSC to take necessary action and issue this warning.
In well-designed products, babywearing is not only safe, but is actually very beneficial when done properly. Studies have shown that quality baby slings and carriers have been shown to save lives, improve health, decrease crying, increase IQ, and facilitate breastfeeding and bonding. For examples of these cases and further reading see “Increased Carrying Reduces Infant Crying: A Randomized Controlled Trial” an article written by Urs A. Hunziker MD and Ronald G. Barr MDCM, FRCP(C), “Saving My Baby” a blog post written on Fierce Mama’s Blog by Sarah Kaganovsky and Dr. Maria Blois’s book Babywearing.
Studies have also shown that worn babies are happier and spend more time in the quiet alert phase. In this phase they benefit more than their non-worn peers in language development and knowledge acquisition. Babywearing also helps babies sleep better, and physical needs, including breastfeeding, are met more quickly by a close, responsive parent. Hotslings seeks to educate people after CPSC Baby Sling warning

Tips for Successful Baby Wearing
For many new moms and dads baby-wearing turns out to be a disappointing experience. After trying a few times they feel uncomfortable, baby feels uncomfortable, and the idea of baby wearing starts to be less appealing. New parents may end up convincing themselves that baby wearing is not for them and that they are just not the baby wearing type.Before you give up on the idea and deprive yourself and baby from the great benefits of baby wearing, here are some tips to make the most of your experience:
1. Don't give up too easily
If your carrier feels uncomfortable it could well be that you are using it incorrectly. Make sure to read the instructions carefully before you start using your gear and try practicing with some kind of stuffed doll before you actually put baby in the carrier. This exercise will make you feel more confident when wearing your baby.
Also, depending on your baby's age, you should try different positions until baby feels comfortable. Some experts say that an upright tummy-to-tummy with their head on your chest position is the preferred position for most babies. There are specific positions for newborns and you should carry your newborn correctly. Remember that newborns need neck support.
When wearing your carrier, remember that babies like gentle motion, so walking or swaying may make the experience more enjoyable. It does take some time for you and for baby to get used to a carrier, but remember that practice makes perfect!
2. Right Size is Crucial for Success
Buying the right size carrier is a crucial factor. If a carrier is pulling on your neck, back, or shoulders, you are most likely using it incorrectly or you are using the wrong size. Remember that you should be using your core muscle to hold the weight. Following the correct wearing instructions and wearing the right size carrier will ensure that the baby's weight is distributed across your back. If your carrier is too big, baby is not secure in it and it isn't safe to wear a carrier too loosely.
3. Pick the right type of carrier for you
There are many types of carriers available. The most common and most widely available is the baby Bjorn front carrier type. This type of carrier can be a great choice but it does have its limitations. The baby Bjorn type is for infants up to 15 pounds or so. This may give the impression to some parents that a carrier is only for small babies, when in fact there are many other carrier types that can be used for newborns to toddlers.
You should also buy a carrier depending on what you plan to use it for. If you are looking for a baby carrier to do activities like walking or hiking, then a carrier like the Ergo or the Kokopax are great choices. But if you plan to snuggle or soothe your baby, then a pouch style sling like Hotslings is better. Also wrap carriers like the Moby Wrap or the Sleepy Wrap are very versatile and allow for a variety of carrying positions.
4. Try it out when baby is at his or her best
If baby is cranky or tired your chances for success are diminished. If you are trying out a new carrier, do it just after your baby has been fed and is in a good mood; this will make the experience smoother for both of you.
5. Wear baby high
This is a great tip found on one of the mothering magazine issues: Wear your baby high with both the sling and vertical front packs like the Baby Bjorn. This prevents back discomfort and allows you to carry a much heavier burden.
6. Babies go through Developmental Phases
Baby may like to be in a sling or carrier at one point and then a few days or weeks later baby starts disliking it. Don't be discouraged! give baby a break and then try the carrier again after baby has gone through his or her developmental "jump"

Hotslings...How HOT are these baby carriers?
We are firm believers in the importance and the benefits of carrying your baby with a baby carrier or a baby sling (baby wearing). Baby wearing promotes bonding and closeness between mom (or dad) and baby, and can work miracles when a cranky baby needs soothing. One of the main reasons why we are so devoted to baby wearing is because, in our own experience, it gives us the freedom to move around with ease and we can use both hands to do things around the office or the house, while keeping baby with us all the time. We definitely recommend baby wearing to all parents of babies and very young children. One of our favorites is Hotslings!
